“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?…”

For those waxing poetic in the summer months – or any other season, for that matter: visit the site’s section on seasonal poems – a good source of inspiration is POETRY FOUNDATION, an organisation with the aim of fostering the presence of poetry in our culture. Its website is a trove of poems, information about poets and poetry learning resources and articles, even audio & video poems, among other features. Based in Chicago, they are also the publishers of Poetry magazine.

Literature in the classroom

As San Jordi approaches -the Patron Saint of Catalonia and an International Book Day, since both Shakespeare and Cervantes died on April 23rd, 1616- , I would like to share a set of materials that were created by a group of teachers from different Escoles Oficials d’Idiomes in Catalonia and one in which I took part. The group had the support of the Catalonian Department of Education and had its origins in the BritLit Project fostered by the British Council, as well as being inspired by the teachings of Professor John McRae from the University of Nottingham, who had come to Barcelona during 2010 and done some teacher training.

The aim of the group was to find attractive texts from contemporary literarure and design activities for their use in the classroom. After trying them out, the materials were discussed, fine-tuned and finally published. You will find the ready-to-use worksheets, as well as teacher’s notes, an introduction and the text themselves.
